Appreciation in Action

by Sylvie Olivier

Several years ago, when we were on the island of St. Martin assisting several groups, Bernard and I rented a superb little villa for two to enjoy the Caribbean experience for a week. It was a week dedicated solely to us… a memory that is still with me today!

Having said that, I don’t feel nostalgic because I’m still appreciating our life as it is right now. Since then, each day has brought its own special flavour and uniqueness, allowing us to appreciate absolutely EVERYTHING life presents us with.

It was while enjoying a coffee with both feet in the sand, admiring the sun’s reflection on the waves, that I was inspired to write a short article entitled Appreciating the Human Experience through the Essence of the Senses, accompanied by an audio guide for a simple exercise.

I remember the level of Appreciation I felt… my heart was filled to the max!

And today, I still appreciate that wonderful memory, and by feeling it, I’m living it again. All this Appreciation I felt manifested itself concretely by taking a few inspired actions.

Here are a few examples of the Appreciation I felt:
  •  My feet in the cool sand;
  •  My first morning coffee;
  •  The sun shimmering against the waves;
  •  The salty smell of the ocean air;
  •  Bernard’s presence by my side.
  •  My physical body comfortably seated in a beach chair;
  •  This moment of rejuvenation in an elegant, warm and harmonious environment;
  •  The wind blowing through my hair;
  •  The breeze on my face;

You get the idea! ALL these examples were deeply felt with an ever-increasing degree of Appreciation.

The vibration of Appreciation flowed through me. I could feel it in my heart, of course, but also all the way to the roots of my hair, my fingertips and even the tips of my toes. Like light shivers, the vibration moved gently, fluidly and lightly. Even though the movement was subtle and gentle, the feeling touched me deeply.

The Appreciation I felt unveiled itself through several inspirations:

  • The inspiration to write the aforementioned article.
  • The inspiration to include an audio to guide the experience.
  • The inspiration to prepare a superb meal that we enjoyed on the patio.
  • The inspiration to make a call with the team to share these inspirations.
  • The inspiration to create a new way to welcome the participants of the following week’s retreat.

Once again, a myriad of inspired actions were activated within me to concretely manifest various projects.

The power of Appreciation in Action is so mighty… it’s very difficult, if not impossible, to share it in words. Rather, it’s at the level of feeling that we can grasp its power.

Feeling enriches awareness, which goes far beyond understanding. To understand a concept, we use the mental energy released inside the head, which can be felt as pressure, tension or vibrations.

I often suggest that workshop participants take their consciousness on a journey as follows:

Bring your awareness to your right knee… to your right big toe. Do you feel any form of presencetingling, warmth, vibration or anything else?”

Then invite them to this:

“Now, understand your right knee and your right big toe.”

And then I get a lot of smirks or even frowns! And I’m asked… what exactly do you want me to understand? Anatomy? Physiology? 🙂

You see? We can feel consciousness traveling everywhere within us without understanding everything. Consciousness can travel in the microcosm as well as the macrocosm, whereas understanding confines us to our heads. In fact, consciousness is already present everywhere, and when we turn our attention to a specific topic, we feel the Presence of Consciousness.

Of course, it’s important to understand certain concepts in order to function in society… but it’s so much more enjoyable to consciously travel to the very depths of ourselves and to the farthest reaches of the Universe… and beyond.

If we return to the topic of this article, Appreciation in Action, I once again return to everything I appreciate on a daily basis and which forms the fabric of my existence… the fabric of my life!

What’s very important to mention is that living consciously through the heart assists us in physically interacting with people, circumstances, various environments. In short, our HEART is the central point that links consciousness to our physical activities. We are in action in life… however, we don’t run in a frantic rhythm to make things happen faster and be satisfied… we honor the natural rhythm of the Cycle of Creation.

Appreciation in Action brings us back to the heart… the heart of ourselves, the heart of our lives, the heart of our relationships and the heart of our projects. This vibration opens our horizons AND gives us access to the resources already available in what I affectionately call “the Buffet of the Universe.” ☺

In addition, I invite you to become aware of what’s around you and what’s already present in your life.

Awareness EXERCISE

I invite you to do this exercise a few times a week.

  • Take a 5-minute break with no distractions.
  • Breathe deeply, place one hand on your heart and the other on your navel – what I call “wave breathing”.
  • Bring your attention to your heart.
  • Can you feel it beating?
  • Do you feel the warmth under your hand?
  • Have fun directing your attention – your awareness – to different parts of your body: your head, shoulders, knees, feet, hands.
  • Then focus on the right or left side of that part of your body.
  • Do you feel more movement, vibration, heat, tingling or presence on the designated side?
  • Bring your attention to the organs: lungs, stomach, liver, eyes, etc.
  • Complete this session with awareness.

And then you can add the notion of Appreciation!

  • Do you appreciate your physical body?
  • Are you aware that your senses are intimately linked to your body?
  • Do you appreciate its presence when you wake up, during the day and at bedtime?

INVENTORY of your life

I now invite you to appreciate EVERYTHING in your life and list it in a journal: the people around you, the environment in which you live, the money already in your bank account, your work or occupations… In short, ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING!!!! It’s a bit like taking inventory… everything is listed, counted, and so on.

This type of exercise may seem trivial and a waste of time… however, it’s the basis of Appreciation in Action!

After that, we invite you to incorporate the practice of Appreciation in Action into your daily life.

PRACTICE: Appreciation in Action

The vibration of Appreciation is so powerful, it assists us in co-creating magnificent experiences and projects, especially when it’s in action.

Here’s a simple exercise: write down 1 to 10 situations each day where you’ve felt Appreciation in your inspired actions.

And finally, remember to offer yourself this APPRECIATION too!

Here’s to Appreciation in Action!
